Similarly, cervical cancer is the second common cancer worldwide. The worldwide incidence of cervical cancer is approximately 510,000 new cases annually, with approximately 288,000 deaths. It is estimated that around 83% of all new cases of cervical cancer and 85% of all the deaths occur in the developing countries. Cervical cancer is the commonest malignancy among women in Nepal too. Every year 2,332 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 1,367 women die from the disease. Cervical cancer ranks as the first most frequent cancer among women in Nepal and the first most frequent cancer among women between 15 and 44 years of age.
In 2016, in order to develop awareness program about reproductive health and cervical cancer screening and reduce the problems, Bajra Samaj Nepal successfully organized Cervical Cancer Screening (VIA) Camp with the financial support from Friends of Nepal Pariwar Foundation and technical support from Cancer Screening Clinic in cooperation with Tamakoshi Cooperative Hospital and Okhreni Health Post. In this free camp, VIA service was provided by three personnel from Cancer Service Clinic of Bharatpur, Chitwan. And the additional services including Breast Cancer Screening, Ultrasound and other reproductive health services were provided by the doctors of Tamakoshi Cooperative Hospital, volunteer doctors from United Kingdom (Dr. Naowmi, Dr. Patrick and Leona, medical student) and breast cancer specialist from the USA (Ms. Dona Hobart, M.D., Medical Director of Carroll Hospital) with the leadership of Dr. Suman Karmacharya.
In the free camp organized in the year 2016, total 175 patients were registered. Among them, 98 were checked for VIA test in Tamakoshi Cooperative Hospital and 74 for same test in Okhreni Health Post on 1st July and 2nd July, 2016 respectively. At the same time, 9 patients had VIA positive case referral, 12 had Breast Cancer Screening and 17 had Uterus Prolapsed detected. During the free camp, BSN provided services of food and lodging for the team including transportation for Tamakoshi Hospital team in Chyashu. BSN also mobilized the female health volunteers from neighboring Village Development Committee named Rampur VDC and Okhreni Health Post for preparing pamphlets, providing meals and broadcasting notices in three local FM radios about the camp.
